Dear Colleagues/AUOL graduates in Saudi Arabia

Muwafiq Fawwaz Hlaf Al-Ruwaily, member of the Saudi Majlis Ash-Shura in cahoots with a recently published blog, have taken it upon themselves to malign and slander our university and to attack its graduates in the media in Saudi Arabia. Why a distinguished member of the Saudi Shura Council, would take up such a slanderous personalized campaign against a university with whom he has never had any dealings is beyond comprehension. And more incomprehensible is why the blog refuses to accept my participation and continue to refuse to publish my comments in rebuttal of their unfounded claims.
The welfare of the students is obviously not their motivation otherwise they would have accepted to publish my comments and experiences as a graduate of the university. Which begs the question “What is their real hidden agenda?”
The university wrote to Mr Al-Ruwaily and copied the letters to

REF: Campaign Against The University
- The University has become aware of a campaign currently being conducted by yourself against this university. This campaign has no foundation whatever, and is based entirely on misrepresentation, and unsubstantiated rumors. The University is at a loss to understand why a distinguished member of the Saudi Shura Council would take up such a personalized campaign of attrition against a University with whom he has never had any dealings.
- Whilst every individual is entitled to their opinion, (freedom of speech and constructive criticism is actively encouraged by the University), uncorroborated attacks with no basis in fact, are strongly resisted.
- The University has always been happy to enter into dialogue with anyone who has concerns with regard to our standard of education and/or service. For instance, on occasions in the past we became aware of unscrupulous agents who did not work in the best interests of our students. Their agreements with AUOL were instantly severed. As a result of that experience we now encourage prospective students in the country to study through AUOL directly and we no longer appoint agents in Saudi Arabia.
- You have however seen fit to malign this University in both the press and the media in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In light of your distinguished position in the Shura Council, you have the free run of the media in your country whilst at the same time the University’s voice cannot be heard. You have unilaterally taken it upon yourself without any contact with us, or thorough investigation, to appoint yourself an expert on the University and to condemn us, without any foundation. In other words you have appointed yourself Judge, Jury and Executioner. In addition, you have also threatened to punish hard working Saudi students who have put in a great deal of time and effort gaining their degrees, and whose only “crime” was to seek an education and to try to better their situation in life. Saudi Arabia is the cradle of the great Islamic civilization. We consider this one-sided attack on an institute of learning to be unjust and wholly un-Islamic.
FOUNDATION
- The American University Of London was originally founded in 1984 as the American College of Science & Technology. AUOL, the international distance learning center, was subsequently incorporated in 1999 as an independent Online and Distance Learning University.
- AUOL is a private international institution. The University is specialized in Distance Learning education (in other words an “open” university) and as such we have no requirement for a campus or elaborate offices.
- Our students work very hard in order to obtain their degrees. Our prospectus clearly states: “If your intention is to “buy” a degree, beware! This university is not now nor has it ever been a “degree mill” and we will instantly reject such applications”.
- Our main emphasis has always been to offer the highest quality of education to our students. Our study modules, both in digital or in print format, are on par with those used by the top universities in the UK. (I’ll be happy to send you a copy on any subject of your choice).
- The supervisors in our Worldwide Adjunct Faculty are highly qualified professionals in their field and mostly holders of PhD degrees who work for some of the most prestigious universities in the world. Every student is allocated a one-on-one supervisor whose task it is to guide and supervise the student throughout his/her program of study until graduation. PhD candidates have to carry out research and submit a dissertation on a subject of their choice. The dissertation is then submitted to a panel of three examiners (the Graduate Dissertation Committee) who evaluate and grade the thesis and may call the candidate to attend a viva voce.
- This reputation for academic excellence meant that degrees conferred by the American University of London have become internationally recognized by the private sector and accepted by multinational businesses as well as by colleges and universities worldwide for further study.
- AUOL has not applied for accreditation with any American regional association nor with similar British official agencies. Many good colleges and universities in the USA are not accredited either by their own choice (since accreditation is a totally voluntary procedure) or because they are new (all universities were unaccredited at one time in their lives). The process of accreditation is lengthy and costly. It can often take many, many decades. Whilst this university may not be accredited in the traditional sense, AUOL is nevertheless recognized as a “provider of excellent quality education”.
- The quality of the education we offer has been rigorously tested by various external specialized agencies. Consequently, AUOL has an agreement with a renowned agency in the USA for the issuance of Equivalency Certificates to AUOL graduates. This Equivalency Certificate states that AUOL degrees are equivalent to similar degrees awarded by US universities. The agency is one of only three evaluation firms in the United States which are recognized by the US Department of Education and the only one recognized by the California Department of Education. They are also unique in the fact they are recognized by the US National Accreditor, ACICS. Based on their Equivalency Certificates AUOL graduates subsequently obtain the Apostille of the State Department in Washington.
- The American University of London has also been admitted as a member of the American Association for Higher Education and Accreditation: AAHEA which has been in existence for over 140 years.
- The concept of a global university –not rooted in a particular country- such as AUOL, is often misunderstood by conventional educators in some parts of the world. In the digital age of information technology and in the global village we live in, AUOL is a pioneer. We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovative technology and that is why we are unsurprised when, from time to time, we experience resistance from those who are not so technically aware. In this day and age, to give but one example, a business or an individual may execute all their banking needs from a single Smartphone from anywhere in the world. Why then does it still cause raised eye brows to discover that numerous universities around the world transmit their programs of study from computer terminals?
- Since its foundation in 1999, AUOL’s motto has always been, “We bring the University to you” We continue to live by this to the present day.
- In conclusion, this University has always been transparent and upfront with its students. All the above information has been in the public domain (www.americanuniversity.eu) and published in all our correspondence and printed literature.
We have no issue whether a nation recognizes or does not recognize our degrees. This is their prerogative. What we strongly object to is being unjustifiably defamed and our officers being maliciously slandered. And above all we take great offence to hear that our graduates are being hounded for no crime other than to pursue an education!

الموضوع بشأن:- الحملة الإعلامية ضد الجامعة.
لقد أصبحت الجامعة واعية بالحملة المقامة منك ضد الجامعة. هذه الحملة ليست لديها أي أساسات تستند عليها، ومبنية على فهمٍ خاطئ وإشاعات عارية عن الصحة. الجامعة مصدومة من أن عضوا بارزا من مجلس الشورى قام بهذه الحملة الشخصية بغرض التشويه من دون أي علاقات سابقة معها.
التعبير عن الرأي حرية. والجامعة تدعم حرية الحديث والنقد البناء ، ولكنها أيضا ضد كل هجوم أو إدعائات لا أساس لها من الصحة.
لطالما أسعد الجامعة الخوض في حوارات مع كل من لديه استفسار أو قلق تجاه خدماتها ومعايير تعليمها. فعلى سبيل المثال؛ أنتبهنا في وقت مضى إلى عدة مندوبين غير نزيهين، ولم تكن مصلحة طلاب الجامعة ضمن اهتماماتهم، فقمنا بخلع عقودهم. كنتيجة لهذا الموقف، تشجع الجامعة الطلاب والطالبات على الدراسة من خلالها مباشرة، دون وسيط، ولهذا السبب لا يوجد مندوبين أو وسطاء في المملكة العربية السعودية.
لكنك مع الأسف قمت بإظهارنا مظهرا خبيثا في وسائل إعلام المملكة العربية السعودية سواء كانت القنوات فضائية أو الصحف. بالنظر إلى موقعك في مجلس الشورى، فأنه بإمكانك التحكم بوسائل الإعلام بينما صوت الجامعة لا يُسمع. لقد قمت بنظرة ضيقة، وبدون أي استعلام أو تقصي، بتنصيب نفسك خبيرا عن الجامعة وشؤونها والتقليل من مقدارها دون أي أساس. بمعنى آخر، لقد قمت بتنصيب نفسك قاضياً، محلِفاً وجلاداً. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، لقد هددت بعقاب طلاب سعوديين جادين وضعوا الكثير من وقتهم وإمكانياتهم في إكتساب الشهادة، وجريمتهم الوحيدة هي طلب العلم من أجل حياة أفضل. المملكة العربية السعودية هي مهد الحضارة الإسلامية العظيمة، ونحن ننظر إلى تفكيرك ورؤيتك الضيقة في هجومك على المنشئة التعليمية كتفكير غير عادل وغير إسلامي.
إيضاحا لما ذكر أعلاه، اسمح لي بإمدادك ببعض الوقائع والحقائق الخاصة بالجامعة ومكانتها العالمية:-
التأسيس:-
أسست الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن عام 1984 م كالكلية الأمريكية للعلوم والتقنية. تم دمج الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن مع المركز الدولي للتعلم عن بُعد عام 1999 م لتكون جامعة مستقلة للتعليم عن بعد وعن طريق الإنترنت.
المكانة
الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن منشأة تعليمية دولية خاصة. تختص الجامعة في التعليم عن بُعد (بمعنى آخر "جامعة مفتوحة") ومن هذا المنطلق لا يتطلب منا أن نمتلك حرما جامعيا أو مكاتب عمل مخصصة.
بيع الشهادات
طلابنا يعملون بجد للحصول على شهاداتهم. نشرتنا التعريفية واضحة تجاه "بيع الشهادات" فتنص على ما يلي بوضوح :-" إذا كان هدفك هو شراء الشهادة، فاحذر!. هذه الجامعة ليست الآن أو في أي وقت سبق مركز بيع شهادات وسيتم رفض تسجيلك فورا".
جودة التعليم
محور تركيزنا كان دائما تقديم أعلى جودة تعليمية لطلابنا. وحدات التدريس للطلاب في صورتيها، الرقمية والمطبوعة ، تتساوى بما يعمل به في أعرق جامعات المملكة المتحدة. (يسعدني أن ارسل لك نسخة من أي مادة من أختيارك.)
المشرفين
المشرفون من أعضاء هيئة التدريس العالميين مؤهلون بجدارة ومحترفون، ومعظمهم حاصل على شهادة الدكتوراة ويعملون في أرقى وأعرق جامعات العالم. كل طالب يخصص له مشرف، مهمته التعليم والإشراف على الطالب / الطالبة خلال البرنامج الدراسي حتى التخرج.
الإعتراف
سمعة الجودة الأكاديمية عنت أن الشهادات الممنوحة من قبل الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن أصبحت معترفاً بها دولياً من قِبل القطاع الخاص، وأيضا من قِبل الشركات الدولية، وأخيرا من قِبل جامعات وكليات عالمية لإجراء الدراسات العليا.
الإعتماد
الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن لم تقدم على الإعتماد مع أي جمعية أمريكية محلية أو أي من نظيراتها من الوكالات الرسمية في المملكة المتحدة. جامعات وكليات كثيرة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تميزت بالجودة والكفاءة لم تقدم على الإعتماد إما باختيارهم ( لأن عملية العتماد أختيارية تماما ) أو لأنها جديدة ( كل الجامعات لم تكن معتمدة في فترة من عمرها). إن عملية الاعتماد مكلفة على المال والوقت، وفي كثير من الأحيان، تأخذ عملية الاعتماد عشرات السنين قبل ان تتم. على الرغم من أن الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن لم تعتمد في الحس التقليدي، فإن هذا لا ينفي أن الجامعة معترف بها و معروفة بـ" مقدمي خدمة تعليم رائعة وذات جودة عالية".
المعادلة بشهادات أمريكية
لقد تم اختبار جودة التعليم التي نقدمها بصرامة من قِبل وكالات مختصة خارجية ومتعددة. وبناء على ذلك، فإن لدى الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن أتفاقية مع وكالة مشهورة ومعروفة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بمنح الشهادات المعادلة لخريجي الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن. ذكر في شهادة المعادلة أن شهادات الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن معادِلة لمثيلاتها الممنوحة في الجامعات الأمريكية. هذه الوكالة هي واحدة من ثلاثة وكالات تقييمية معترف بها من قِبل وزارة التعليم بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والوحيدة المعترف بها من قِبل وحدة التعليم بكالفورنيا. وهم متميزون بواقع الاعتراف بهم من قِبل هيئة الإعتماد القومية الأمريكية، (ACICS) . وبناء على معادلة شهادات خريجي الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن، فإنهم تبعيا يحصلون على (Apostille) من وزارة الخارجية في واشنطن.

الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن عضو في الجمعية الأمريكية للإعتماد والتعليم العالي ( AAHEA ) الموجودة قبل 140 سنة.
التعليم في العصر الرقمي
قد يسئ بعض من الأشخاص التقليديين فهم مصطلح الجامعة العالمية، غير مربوطة بدولة كما هي الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن. في العصر الرقمي لتقنية المعلومات والقرية الرقمية التي نعيش فيها، تعتبر الجامعة الأمريكية في لندن هي الرائدة. نفخر بتواجدنا في واجهة الإبداع التقني ولهذا نحن لا نتفاجأ بين الحين والآخر بوجود مقاومة من ليس لديهم وعي تقني. كمثال:- في هذا اليوم والعصر، يستطيع أي فرد إنهاء جميع احتياجاته من حسابة البنكي بهاتف ذكي من أي مكان من أنحاء العالم، فلماذا لا تزال الدهشة والاستنكار موجوداً عندما تقوم جامعات عديدة ببث برامجها الدراسية عن طريق شاشات الحاسب الآلي.
منذ إنشاء الجامعة سنة 1999 م، شعار الجامعة كان ولا زال:-" نحن نجلب الجامعة لك" وسنظل نعيش بهذا الشعار.
الشفافية والأمانة
